Saved from cervical cancer from a Pap smear

Routine Check up

In 2012, I went for my routine PAP smear and unfortunately, the doctor detected precancerous cells on my cervix and promptly scheduled me to have a LEEP (Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure).

The LEEP is a treatment that prevents cervical cancer. During the procedure, a small electrical wire loop is used to remove abnormal cells from the cervix.

Follow up

One year after the procedure, I repeated the PAP smear, and was cleared of any abnormalities.

Question is, if I haven’t done the PAP smear, what would be my fate today? Would the cancer have grown and spread? Would it be benign? (not harmful); your guess is as good as mine.

However, what I do know is that getting that PAP smear was a good step in the right direction, and one I will take, and will encourage others to take. On this note, I would like to talk about preventive medicine.

Why is this important?

In preventive medicine, the goal is to promote, protect, and maintain the health well-being of individuals and the community at large and by so doing, help to prevent disease, disability and even death.

As a health care practitioner, I am 100% vested in this goal and will do all I can daily to help my patients and families continue to receive the best of care and this improved positive health outcomes.

That dedication to care informed by decision to start this health site.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is crucial to generalized well-being, and I intend for this site to be a fun experience and a great avenue to share tips with one another.

So, hop on board if you are ready for a change. It is going to be a health experience like no other.

Your efforts at bringing awareness of total health is commendable, but here in Nigeria there is very little chance of accessing these preventive health initiatives by the generality of the public, secondly there is not enough public sensitisation on the subject.
Lastly, for those who know about these tests the costs are not pocket friendly.
